Normalcy returned today in the towns of Theni district bordering Kerala which witnessed violent incidents during the past few days on Mullaperiyar Dam row.
Official sources here said though the situation was absolutely peacefull in the border towns, vehicular traffic from Tamil Nadu to Kerala via three prime roads-- Kumuli, Cumbum Mettu and Bodi Mettu-- in Theni district-- was still kept closed for the fourth consecutive day as a precautionary measure.
While Tamil Nadu vehicles, most of them carrying Ayyappa devotees who were stranded at different locations in Kerala due to violent incidents, had started returning to Tamil Nadu since last night through Bodi Mettu Road, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) buses were not operated to Kerala from Theni for the fourth day today and similarly Kerala vehicles did not come to Tamil Nadu.
The law and order situation was fully under control with the deployment of heavy police force at the bordering towns. Shops and commercial establishments opened for routine transactions today after three days of closure at Cumbum, Gudalur and Lower Camp.
Ayyappa devotees vehicles bound for Kerala from Tamil Nadu and other states were diverted at Sempatti in Dindigul district and advised to go through Palani, Udumalpet and Munnar to Sabarimala, instead of going through Theni district, the sources said.
